Mental Health First Aid
Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults ages 18 and over. Peer-reviewed studies from around the world show that individuals trained in MHFA:
- Expand their knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges.
- Can identify appropriate types of professionals and self-help resources for individuals with a mental health or substance use challenge.
- Have increased confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress.
- Show increased mental wellbeing themselves.
What is mental health first aid?
Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

What does the process look like?
The class is available in an in-person, virtual, or hybrid/blended format. All format options are close to an 8-hour, full day course.
The course is taught in a group format, with a minimum of five attendees and a maximum of 30.
What will attendees get out of the class?
Attendees will learn:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
- How to interact with a person in crisis
- How to connect a person with help
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use, and self-care
Participants who successfully complete all requirements for the course will receive a MHFA certificate and be certified in Adult Mental Health First Aid USA. This certification is good for three years.
